help with sleeping pattern

Hi I'm new here and I would really appreciate some help and advise regarding my baby's sleeping habits. Hes 16 months and has to be put to sleep by me rocking him and wakes up a few times and ive fallen into a bad habit of putting him to bed with me!!!! when he wakes in the night he wakes up scared??? is it a bad dream? is tough love my only way??? we love any advise, thank you
